OXFORD COUNTY - Oxford County may be riding the temperature rollercoaster but can that make you sick?
With us being right in the middle of cold and flu season all it takes is to touch a door handle before being infected by a virus. Acting Medical Officer of Health with Oxford County Public Health, Dr. Douglas Neil, explains whether the old wives' tail is true, "This time of year we're talking about great fluctuation, the mild temperatures then get cooler, I don't think that in itself makes you ill. When we have milder conditions at this time of the year when there is a lot of socializing, most illnesses come from other people. When you are in contact I think that is why we tend to see a good deal of more illnesses around the holiday season."
So if you have caught a cold or flu this season you cannot attribute it to fluctuating temperatures and Dr. Neil knows the top ways to keep yourself healthy this winter.
"I think the most important thing of course is to use personal hygiene precautions, use hand sanitation, cover your coughs, and your sneezes in appropriate fashion by coughing into your elbow, and those basic tips are important."
Dr. Neil spoke to Heart FM to talk about how certain weather can greatly affect the body. "Certainly extremes of temperature can effect you, we all know about dehydration and the effect of high temperatures, and we know how extreme cold can cause hypothermia. For the general person those aren't things that you experience and certainly those aren't things that you experience at this time of the year."
The temperature change has the potential to lower your immune system therefore making you more susceptible of becoming sick but it isn't the lone cause for catching something.
