Mayors of two municipalities involved in a proposed landfill in Oxford County say public reaction has been surprisingly quiet. On Friday, Walker Environmental Group announced plans to use a pit at the Beachville Quarry to dump 100 trucks of Toronto's trash per day. Ingersoll Mayor Ted Comiskey says he hasn't heard much reaction from people in the town because the issue "probably hasn't hit home yet." Comiskey says he doesn't see a benefit to his town, and they will be watching the situation closely. "Because it is on our boundary line, we have to watch this very closely and react to the situation, to the sites, or to the studies that are going to be done." Mayor of Zorra Township, Margaret Lupton, says there have only been a couple of enquiries into the township. She says Council isn't having a knee-jerk reaction either. "The council, we are not even really discussing this at any great amount. It's up to us to listen to all the information that has to come through. Certainly, we are going to go through every step that has to be gone through." Lupton says Zorra will protect the land, water and air, but also says she's heard positive things about Walker Environmental, and how they treat the people of other communities where they have gravel pits and landfill sites.
