Southwestern Public Health is warning everyone about an increase in opioid overdoses in Oxford County and Elgin County during the final two weeks of January.
WOODSTOCK - Southwestern Public Health is warning everyone about an increase in opioid overdoses in Oxford County and Elgin County.
Emergency room visits spiked during the last two weeks of January with people overdosing on opioids. During that same time period, there have been a number of corresponding reports from the community about increased numbers of overdoses and deaths. It is believed the increase is related to a batch of purple fentanyl currently circulating in the region. SW Public Health issued a warning about this dangerous drug last month.
Heart FM has reached out to SW Public Health and will be following up on this story tomorrow.
In the case of an overdose you should:
- Call 911
- Give Naloxone if you suspect the overdose was caused by an opioid.
- Stay with and assist the person until paramedics arrive.
- The person should go to the hospital with paramedics for further treatment.
If you are using substances:
- Don't use alone.
- Avoid mixing substances.
- Start with a small amount.
- Carry a Naloxone kit.
