WOODSTOCK - The Relay for Life in Woodstock was another smashing success for the local Canadian Cancer Society.
Money is still pouring in and at last count, organizers estimate the event this year brought in over $130,000. Teams took to the track at CASS for six hours on Friday night starting with the Survivors lap. Co-Chair Mark Schadenberg tells Heart FM the luminary ceremony at 10 pm was very emotional once again this year.
"The luminary ceremony is always one of the heartwarming moments of Relay for Life, everything is very quiet around the track and then the bagpipes would start playing and this year we had a band of about 15 musicians leading the lap around the track for the luminary ceremony. At that point in time they changed the word from Hope to Cure with luminaries sitting on the side of a hill at College Avenue Secondary School."
Schadenberg says the event started with the opening ceremonies and then the Survivors Lap.
"Linda Torkelson was our community champion this year, she's also on the organizing committee and of course a cancer survivor, she had a speech about her story and then she led a banner with co-chair and cancer survivor Don McKay for one lap around the track at College Avenue Secondary School."
Schadenberg adds the itself was a lot of fun and they were able to raise some money for a great cause.
