The scientific director of the province's COVID-19 Science Advisory Table says the province could safely re-open outdoor recreational facilities even if the stay at home order is extended.
Dr. Peter Juni says activities such as tennis, golf and volleyball are low risk, and people can wear masks if they can't socially distance during the activity.
Juni says activities linked with the sports, such as sharing a locker room or car-pooling, represent a greater risk of exposure to the virus, and should be addressed by public health officials.
Last month, the province enacted a stay at home order, resulting in the closure of businesses and many outdoor recreational facilities.
Health Minister Christine Elliott said earlier this week that the province is considering extending the order, which would likely result in outdoor facilities remaining closed.
Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. David Williams says the province shouldn't lift the stay at home order until there are "well below 1,000 daily cases."
The science table has been critical of the decision to restrict outdoor activities, saying it harms those who don't have yards of their own.
