It is National AccessAbility Week, and the Woodstock Art Gallery and Autism Canada have partnered together.
WOODSTOCK - The Woodstock Art Gallery continues making experiences more comfortable for visitors.
Sensory Support Kits will be available and have been developed by Autism Canada. The kits are designed to help visitors manage sensory inputs, so their visit to the gallery can be done comfortably and independently. Each kit will have a backpack with a stuffed animal, a fleece blanket, noise reduction earmuffs, tinted safety glasses and fidget toys.
Education Coordinator at the Art Gallery, Dee Logan says it is such a great way to help everyone in the community.
"Public facilities or unfamiliar spaces can be challenging for many people, especially those who are neurodivergent or sensory-sensitive” Bright lights, crowds and unexpected noises can be stressful, overwhelming and overstimulating. The items in the kit can help to regulate and engage the senses, provide comfort and focus, and reduce overstimulation."
Interim Director/Curator and Head of Education, Stephanie Porter mentions the joy that is being felt with this collaboration.
"We’re proud to be collaborating with Autism Canada and Oxford Community Foundation to break down barriers and support the needs of people with disabilities at the Woodstock Art Gallery."
Six kits are available to sign out for free at the front desk starting today and the program is being launched in connection with National AccessAbility Week, which will wrap up on Saturday.
