It was a senseless and tragic long weekend on OPP patrolled roadways. Two more fatalities this weekend brings the death toll to 238 people killed in crashes so far this year in the province. That's a 20% increase from last year. The latest was 24-year-old Sophie Proulx of Brantford was killed in a collision on Otterville Road Friday night. And there was more senseless driving that didn't end in tragedy, but did end with charges for the drivers. On Friday night, an OPP officer conducting radar pulled over a car on John Pound Road in Tillsonburg that was allegedly clocked at 189km/h in an 80 zone. The 25-year-old driver was charged with street racing. There were also a number of impaired drivers arrested this weekend, as OPP conducted 36 RIDE programs Labour Day weekend. On Monday, police arrested a pair of Guelph residents at a RIDE check in Innerkip. 24-year-old Nadia Peters was charged with driving while having Over 80 milligrams of alcohol in 100mls of Blood. Her passenger, 21-year-old Steffen Potts was charged with possession of marijuana, and possession for the purpose of trafficking. Also on Monday, 48-year-old Manuel Darosa of London was charged with impaired driving at a RIDE stop in Mount Elgin. On Saturday night, police were called to the scene of a vehicle in a ditch on Township Road 11 in Blandford-Blenheim. 51-year-old John Kraehling of Cambridge was arrested and charged with impaired driving. On Sunday night, police were called about a suspected impaired driver between Woodstock and Ingersoll. Police pulled over and arrested 55-year-old Mark Hutson of South-West-Oxford with impaired driving.
