Oxford County Public Health is offering up a smoke free movie night this Friday.
WOODSTOCK - Oxford County Public Health is offering up a smoke free movie night this Friday.
They will be showing the feature film "HOME" under the lights at Southside Park on a giant inflatable screen at the base of the toboggan hill, near the skate park. HOME is a smoke free movie and the health unit wants to raise awareness about the harmful impact that smoking in movies can have on youth. Research shows youth who see smoking in movies are more likely to smoke. Summer Health Promotions Student Mackenzie Bogue tells Heart FM you would be amazed at how many movies have smoking scenes in them.
"Actually more than you would think do have smoking and a lot of movies targeted at kids and their is a web site you can go on called smoke free movies if your interested and you can see a list of films rated for youth that are smoke free."
Bogue says one thing they would like to see is all movies containing tobacco use have an adult rating of 18A. 57% of the top grossing movies in theatre's over the past 10 years featured on screen smoking and 86 percent of those movies were rated for youth in Ontario.
Things get started for the free movie at 7 p.m with fun and games and the film will come on at dusk. The whole event is free for the whole family and popcorn will be provided , however parents are reminded to bring snacks and water for the little ones.
