WOODSTOCK - The Woodstock Fire Department has been delivering more than prevention tips lately.
As part of the annual Fire Prevention Week, The Pizza Delivery Program is a unique attention grabber to get the message out to check your smoke and carbon monoxide alarms.
Public Relations Coordinator with the Woodstock Fire Department, Lisa Woods told Heart FM about how the program works.
"We will hit a pizza place up and go out with a delivery, and if the home owner has working smoke and carbon monoxide alarms, we will pay for their pizza, and if they don't then we educate and provide them sometimes with an actual working smoke alarm so that we know they are going to be protected in the night."
This year, 2 out of 3 pizzas were delivered free of charge, while one home received a bill as well as some education and safety tips.
The program has a history of success as they once handed out a smoke alarm to a family instead of free pizza, only to learn that the family had a blaze after the fact, with the smoke alarms potentially saving their lives.
Woods says it's a good idea to check and change batteries in all smoke alarms and carbon monoxide alarms with each season change.
"If you haven't checked your carbon monoxide and smoke alarms yet this week, please do so. Ten years and they have to be replaced, it doesn't matter if they are hard wired or battery operated. Take the time, test them, check the date on them, and replace them if necessary."
