SWPH - Southwestern Public Health is taking a closer look at its consumption and treatment services.
These services help support prevention, harm reduction, and treatment for people who use drugs.
The health unit has launched a feasibility study, so it can take a closer look at the supports and service models currently available in our community. An external advisory committee will be reaching out to local community agencies, healthcare providers, chambers of commerce, and more. SWPH is also going to post an online survey at some point, so other members of the public can take part.
Medical Officer of Health Dr. Ninh Tran says the public input will be collected in March and the final report should be completed before the end of the year.
"While we cannot speculate what the feasibility study data will say, we know that conducting this study is a critical step to addressing such a complex public health concern."
Dr. Tran says a total of 43 opioid-related deaths were reported within the health unit between April 2020 and March 2021.
"The opioid crisis has a devastating impact on individuals, families, and communities. It is a crisis that affects everyone, not only those living in large urban centres. COVID-19 exacerbated this crisis, and we have observed an increase in overdose deaths locally."
