The Vital Perspectives series has had their newest video released, and it focuses on Belonging in Schools.
OXFORD COUNTY - Southwestern Public Health has released their newest Vital Perspectives video.
Vital Perspectives is a series that explores key public health issues in Oxford County, Elgin County, and the City of St. Thomas. The third instalment talks about belonging in schools, and Public Health Nurse Catherine McLean has this to say.
"Youth who experience belonging have the opportunity to develop confidence and their self-identity. Belonging is also a protective factor, which means that it can buffer against any trauma or challenging experiences a person may have."
McLean mentions that this topic is at the forefront as another school year is right around the corner.
"Local school boards are already working on building belonging and inclusivity within schools."
She also says, by supporting early intervention and building resilience, these partnerships help schools prioritize mental well-being as part of everyday learning.
According to the 2019-2020 Canadian Community Health Survey, 7 in 10 youth aged 12 and older reported a strong or somewhat strong sense of belonging to their local community. If you want more information about this instalment of the series, you can click here.
