A local man will be top of mind as the Terry Fox Run hopes to raise $20,000 in Woodstock to honour his memory.
WOODSTOCK - This year's Terry Fox Run will be at a new location and pay tribute to a local man.
The slogan for this year is '20 for 20' and Run Coordinator Peter Ewing says it holds special significance.
"The first 20 is for $20,000 because last year, for the first time in three or four years we fell below the $20,000 mark for the Terry Fox Run. So $20,000 for number 20 of the Woodstock Kings, Bill Gillespie."
Gillespie played on the Woodstock Kings basketball team years ago. He also played a key role in planning the Woodstock Terry Fox Run in previous years, but passed away this past March at the age of 73 after a courageous battle against cancer.
The run will take place at the College Avenue Secondary School Track, which has been dubbed the Terry Fox Memorial Track.
Ewing says people will be able to walk the track, or check out some community run courses.
"We'll have people able to walk and run laps of the track if they choose to do that and we are presently developing some run courses out in the community: 2.5 km, 5 km and 10 km courses for people who like to do a more serious run."
Ewing says they plan on getting the word out about the event as soon as they get their supplies from the Terry Fox Foundation.
"Once that material comes in from the Terry Fox Foundation, our plan is to get the posters out, to get the advertising out, to ask for pledge sheets to be at the Woodstock Market on Saturday mornings and to have baskets around town with Toonies For Terry and just to make sure it's a successful event for our community."
This year's run will be taking place on September 18th
