Finn McCallum will attend the studio art program Western University this fall.

WOODSTOCK - An aspiring artist from Thamesford is the recipient of this year's Friends of the Woodstock Art Gallery Legacy Scholarship.

Finn McCallum is about to graduate from H.B. Beal Secondary School in London. The $1,000 scholarship will help him attend the studio art program Western University in the fall, so he can become an art therapist someday.

He says art has helped him on his own mental health journey.

"Art is crucial to me as it provides an opportunity to channel and invent. In my work, I enjoy narrating and deconstructing parts of my mind. This has helped my mental health by bringing clarity to what I see, feel and want. I want to help others process their psychological needs to understand and take care of themselves."

Local artist and pottery studio owner HollyJo selected McCallum for the scholarship.

"Finn’s deep connection to art as a therapeutic tool and his commitment to using creativity in service of others is both moving and inspiring. His passion for mental health, mentorship, and community-building through the arts demonstrates maturity, vision and a genuine sense of purpose."

McCallum's artwork is currently on display in the second floor of the art gallery and you have until August 2nd to check it out.
