County Council has approved $500,000 for a retrofit at the Thamesford Wastewater Treatment Facility.
THAMESFORD - The wastewater treatment facility in Thamesford will be downsizing in the future. County Council approved a $500,000 retrofit for the plant Wednesday night.
Warden David Mayberry tells Heart FM the retrofit will prepare the facility for when the Maple Leaf Food plant leaves town in 2018.
"70 to 85 percent of all the sewage in Thamesford came from Maple Leaf. If you take that out of the system and they're no longer producing sewage the plant is way over capacity and it was constructed to be able to handle that, so now when [Maple Leaf Foods] is not there it isn't going to do as good a job."
Mayberry says plans will be made to help the plant accommodate the town's needs.
"What we need to do is look at how can we retrofit that plant to bring it back down to a lower level of capacity without destroying the ability of the plant to be rebuilt, upgraded, or moved forward again if we want to be able to expand again."
The retrofit itself will begin before Maple Leaf Foods closes and it will not impact residents.
