National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week is wrapping up with a big thank you from the Woodstock Fire Department.
WOODSTOCK - Members of the Woodstock Fire Department are very thankful for our local 911 dispatchers this National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week.
Acting Fire Chief Jeff Slager says our dispatchers provide a calming voice on the end of the line to people who are often experiencing one of the worst days of their lives.
"They're kind of the first ones to pick what priority it needs to go through and where it needs to go, but unfortunately they are also the first ones to hear the bad side of stuff that goes on before it gets to us."
The dispatchers will also provide emergency services with the information they need before attending the scene.
Slager says his department responds to about 2,200 calls a year.
"That's just one fire service. When you look at the number of calls for service that they're dealing with for Woodstock Police as well as the county fire departments, they're on the phone a lot and they're dealing with a lot of situations.
The Woodstock Fire Department is contracted under the same dispatchers as the Woodstock Police. Ambulance calls are transferred to a paramedic dispatch centre in the London area.
