Close to 200 trees will be planted in Tillsonburg's Memorial Park today in honour of National Tree Day.
TILLSONBURG - Nearly 200 trees are going to be planted in Tillsonburg.
The town will celebrate National Tree Day with a tree planting event near the Tillsonburg Community Centre, and it will run for two hours from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m.
The trees of various species and sizes will be planted all throughout Memorial Park, around the ball diamonds, and in Dave Johnson Memorial Dog Park.
A special tulip tree will also be planted in recognition of the municipality’s 150th anniversary earlier this year.
Around 160 elementary students from local schools are expected to attend the event, and Mayor Stephen Molnar thinks that National Tree Day provides them with a great opportunity to learn about environmental stewardship and urban forestry.
“Not only will the students help plant trees on town property, but they will also be given seedlings to take home and plant as well.”
If any seedlings remain after the event, they will be made available to the public at the Community Centre until 6:00 p.m., as long as supplies last.
