Tip Tuesday with Oxford OPP - August 2025

OPP Constable Randi Crawford joined Dan and Marcie in studio for the August edition of Tip Tuesday.

OXFORD COUNTY - Out of province licence plates, potential government related fraud, and complicated intersections with train tracks.

Those were some of the topics discussed during the latest edition of Tip Tuesday with the Oxford OPP.

Community Safety and Media Relations Officer Randi Crawford answered questions from listeners while she was in the Heart FM studio this morning, and you can find the complete break down below:

1) The intersection of Highbury Ave and Florence Street in London meets at an angle, and there's also a train track to complicate things. Where should you stop if you are approaching the intersection from the south on Highbury?

Constable Crawford admitted that she was not familiar with the area, but had this to say when it comes to railroad crossings in general.

"Anytime you're at a train track, there should be some sort of a stop line. So if it's not near the track, it's likely at the lights themselves. So it might seem like a significant difference it's before the track, but that is what the plan is for safety so you have to stop way back at that stop line."

Before you proceed, whether its into an intersection or crossing a train track, you must be aware of your surroundings and make sure its safe to do so.

You should always be cautious around track tracks, whether it's a commonly used portion in the city, or a track in a rural area that rarely sees trains.

2) What should you do if you believe a government agency is committing fraud when it comes to cheques being sent to them?

Constable Crawford says you should reach out to the government agency with your concerns first.

"If you don't like the answer that you get with the first person you talk to, almost everyone has a supervisor. You are entitled to say 'I am not very comfortable with that answer' and ask to speak with the supervisor. So I would go those routes first to see if you can find the answer that way because a lot of times there are a lot of policies and procedures that government agencies have that we might not be aware of."

If you still believe a fraud is taking place after having those conversations, you can contact police so an investigation can take place.

3) Can someone with out of province licence plates be pulled over for speeding or other driving related infractions? If their vehicle gets impounded, are they considered to have illegal plates.

Anyone can visit and drive in Ontario if they have a licence, but Constable Crawford says they will face the same penalties if they fail to follow the rules of the road.

"Could you imagine you are someone who has travelled from the United States, you've come here and were not respectful of the Highway 401 speed limit so you're charged with stunt driving. The same rules will apply, so you will have your licence suspended for 30 days and your vehicle impounded for 14 days. What if it was a rental car? Think of those fees!."

If you recently moved here from out of province, Crawford says you have 30 days to register for Ontario licence plates and you can reach out to ServiceOntario for more information.

4) With the kids going back to school next week, what should we keep in mind?

Constable Crawford says the back to school season impacts everyone, not just families.

"It's going to be a change in all of our routines. The roads will be busy with school buses, there will be children crossing the roads, parents will be changing their schedule to drop their kids on and off at school. So you're going to want to give yourself extra time in the morning and the afternoon."

Drivers should be on the lookout for school buses, school zones, drop off areas, and crossing guards. If your child is walking to and from school this year, make sure they are aware of all of the rules and regulations for pedestrians.

The next Tip Tuesday is scheduled for Tuesday, September 23rd and you can submit a question online here.
