A Woodstock man was caught on camera stealing a hockey stick left outside of a local business.
WOODSTOCK - In support of the Humboldt Broncos tragedy, the entire nation placed hockey sticks on their front steps.
Yesterday, a man was caught on camera stealing a Humboldt tribute hockey stick from a local business. Making matters worse, it happened on "jersey day" which was intended to honour the victims of the bus crash that claimed the lives of 16 people.
Bridget Vadermeer is the receptionist at The Comfort Guy, where the stick was taken from.
"Realizing that something was stolen on such a symbolic day when everybody is paying tribute when people have lost their lives, we are all family, and it's pretty sad that something like that had to happen on a day like yesterday."
The staff from The Comfort Guy had just snapped a group photo in their hockey jerseys while holding a Humboldt tribute hockey stick. Less than 5 minutes after placing the stick out side, it was stolen.
The man was seen walking east bound around 1:00p.m. on Dundas Street, before entering the vestibule of The Comfort Guy, and quickly snatched the stick and fled the area.
Vadermeer is the owner of the stick that was taken, she says the theft won't stop her from putting out another.
"I will continue to support and recognize because that is what it is all about, recognizing the people and supporting them.
As for the thief, thanks to the surveillance footage, Woodstock Police located the man around 8:30 p.m. yesterday evening. The 29 year old Woodstock man has been charged with theft and breach of probation, he is expected in court on May 8th.
