Education Minister Laurel Broten says she'll announce today what the government plans to do in the wake of strike announcements by elementary school teachers at two school boards. Elementary teachers in the Avon Maitland and Ontario North East school boards say they'll be staging a one-day strike on Monday. The Elementary Teachers' Federation of Ontario says the strike is to protest Bill 115, which gives Broten the ability to stop strikes by teachers and lockouts, and impose a collective agreement. Broten says she understands parents are concerned about the effects a strike will have on their families. The ETFO says 92 per cent of more than 46,000 members who cast a ballot during an online vote earlier this week voted in favour of a one-day political protest if Broten uses Bill 115 to end a strike or impose a contract. Progressive Conservative education critic Lisa MacLeod is calling on Broten to use the tools at her disposal within Bill 115 to ``re-impose some semblance of order'' in Ontario schools. Meanwhile, local high school teachers voted down the tentative agreement that was reached between their union and the Thames Valley District School Board. According to reports, the teachers will halt the performance of some administrative duties as of today and are planning to withdraw from extra-curricular activities Monday. Ontario Secondary School Teachers' Federation President Ken Coran said the teachers would accept a wage freeze but feel Bill 115 goes too far in eroding their democratic rights for collective bargaining.
