OXFORD COUNTY - Unifor Local 636 is looking to raise awareness about the over 2000 Long Term Care Home residents who lost their lives to COVID-19 in Ontario.
Vice President Melissa Holden says they're collecting slippers, one pair for every life lost.
"We have quite a few of our members who work in Long Term Care in the County. Thus far, we are lucky, we haven't had any an outbreak that has cost us any lives to COVID-19, but across the Province we have reached over 2,000 deaths in Long Term Care due to COVID-19 and that is just a tragedy, there is no other way to state it. We felt we needed to do something to pay tribute and bring attention to the amount of people who have lost their lives."
Holden says they are still deciding what they will do with the slippers once they reach 2,000. You can donate the slippers to the Unifor Local 636 office on Beale Street in Woodstock.
"The slippers are coming in as donations, new or used slippers, some people have also brought in money and I have gone out and purchased some slippers to add to our collection."
Holden says they do ask you to call first to set up a time to drop off the slippers. You can contact them at (519) 537-5942. Holden says the goal here is to bring awareness.
"I think it's important because I think it draws people's attention to long term care and the gaps in care that exist in that environment."
Holden says the announcement from the Province last week is a huge step in the right direction to have the 4 hours of minimum care per resident, per day, however she says more needs to be done.
