CUPE holds Kitchener Rally in support of Unifor's Toyota union drive.
CUPE is holding a rally in Kitchener today to try to encourage Toyota's Woodstock and Cambridge workforce to unionize with Unifor.
Director of Organizing, John Aman tells Heart FM, "We're just building our support. We're engaging the workers and having a good debate and discussion. Not only do we want to have a vote, but from our vantage point, we want to have a successful vote."
Unifor would need more than 3000 of Toyota's 6000 workers to not only sign their union cards to bring the drive to a vote, but to then vote to unionize.
Aman says the union hopes to hold a vote in the next couple of months. "A lot of our supporters are patiently waiting. People want to see that vote happen and so do we. But something like this is a huge undertaking. We have one chance to do it right. There is no do-overs."
The rally starts at 1 o'clock this afternoon and runs for about an hour at the Unifor Local 1524 on Wabanaki Drive in Kitchener.
