A miraculous crash on the 401 today, both in terms of the size of the crash, and the fact that only minor injuries are reported. The Eastbound 401 was closed by OPP, just before noon, when as many as 50 vehicles collided in snowy and blinding conditions. The crash happened near the Sweaburg Rd. exit, and remains closed east of County Road 6 (Foldens Line). An Emergency Detour Route is in place, however, due to the backlog of traffic, you may want to get off earlier (Culloden Rd. or Hwy 19). Westbound traffic is also moving very slowly through Woodstock. OPP Constable Lisa Narancsik tells Heart FM, "Approximately 50 vehicles have been involved in collisions out on the eastbound 401 highway. We only have minor injuries at this point in time." A caller into Heart FM, who drove past the scene just before 1PM says "I bet it's not far off of 40 cars involved. Westbound is slow because the weather is bad and everyone is looking at the accident of course. The carnage goes at least half-a-kilometer, about 10 trucks involved, multiple cars, they're taking people out of cars on stretchers." OPP, Oxford EMS, Woodstock and Beachville Fire crews are all at the scene. A Woodstock Transit bus has been called out to the highway to transport those stranded on the highway to safety. The crash out on the highway is also having an impact on city streets this afternoon. Mill St. and Dundas St. are experiencing heavy truck traffic due with vehicles being diverted off the 401. We'll have more details as they become available.
