UPDATE: Province Introducing $15 Minimum Wage for Digital Platform Workers

Province introducing "Working for Workers Act, 2022" which looks to establish a minimum wage and other rights for digital platform workers.

The province is introducing legislation that would establish a $15/hr minimum wage and other rights for digital platform workers. 

This includes drivers who offer rides or deliver food and other items for companies such as Uber and Door Dash. 

Premier Doug Ford made the announcement today, saying the province needs to keep pace with changing labour trends. 

"In the past two years, we've seen huge shifts surround traditional labour markets, and as we build a resilient economy, our government must keep pace with those changes."

The proposed legislation would include the right for workers to keep their tips along with regular pay periods, as well as transparency regarding how pay is calculated and the allocation of work. 

It would also give employees the right to resolve work-related disputes in Ontario, and offer protection from reprisal if they look to assert their rights. 

If passed, Ontario would become the first province in Canada to establish a minimum wage for digital platform workers. 

The province says as many as one in five Canadians work in the gig economy, and the number is expected to increase.
