Canadian exports not classified under CUSMA are now subject to a 35 percent tariff from the United States.
CANADA/USA - It's official, the United States has raised the tariff rate against Canada from 25 percent to 35 percent.
This will impact Canadian exports that do not fall under the Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA) that was signed in 2018. In his statement released last night, Prime Minister Mark Carney said some industries will be hit hard by the levies, using the lumber, steel, aluminum, and automobile sectors as an example.
A statement from the White House said Canada failed to do more to stop the flow of fentanyl across the border. Prime Minister Carney responded saying Canada has been working hard to address this, even though it only accounts for one percent of American fentanyl imports.
Carney added that Canada will continue to negotiate a trading relationship with the United States. The Canadian government is also focused on building Canada strong, with the provinces and territories working with Ottawa to cut down trade barriers and create one Canadian economy.
