The Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police’s “Lock It Or Lose It” Crime Prevention Program has provided some tips on how to help protect your car and your belongings, including rolling up your windows, lock the doors and put the key in your pocket.
WOODSTOCK - There have been a number of calls to the Woodstock Police regarding vehicle thefts.
Many of these them were unlocked, including company vehicles on business properties and personal vehicles in driveways, building parking garages and in public parking lots.
A few of thefts saw the vehicle being damaged as a way of getting into the car, and others had valuables in them had valuables, such as purses or wallets.
Police say tools/construction equipment, electronics, ownership/insurance documents and sports equipment are among the other valuables being stolen.
According to the Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police’s “Lock It Or Lose It” Crime Prevention Program, here are some safety tips regarding vehicle thefts:
- Always roll up your vehicle’s windows, lock the doors and put the key in your pocket.
- Never leave your car unattended while it’s running.
- If you have a garage, use it and lock the door as well as your vehicle.
- Never leave your car keys in plain view or in an easily accessible area.
- Keep your vehicle registration certificate and proof of insurance on you at all times. Don’t leave these documents in your glove compartment.
- Always park your vehicle in a well-lit area.
- Never leave valuable objects or packages in view. Put them in the trunk.
- Give only your ignition key to a parking lot attendant. Keep all other keys with you.
