The Ingersoll Town Council has once again made it emphatically clear they are not a willing host to a proposed mega landfill from Walker Environmental Group.
INGERSOLL - The Walker Environmental Group made a presentation at Ingersoll Town Council.
They were at the meeting last night to give a timeline on the process for Environmental Assessments and what studies are being done.
Mayor Ted Comiskey says council took this as an opportunity to once again let Walker know that Ingersoll is not a willing host for their landfill.
"We asked a phenomenal number of questions to Walker Environmental, bringing to Walker's attention that number 1 we are not happy that this landfill has been requested for this area, not only are we not happy, that we do not want it to happen. We were emphasizing the health impacts, the social impacts and the dangers, outlining the dangers of air, water and soil and the contamination that could affect generations to come. We also brought it to their attention that we have no intent of agreeing in any way to having a mega landfill of 18 million tonne of GTA waste deposited at our door step."
Comiskey says it is going to be at least a year before all the assessments are done and he is hopeful they will be successful in their bid to block the landfill from coming to town.
"So we are looking at construction or completion, if approved, which I believe it will not be, sometime in 2022."
Comiskey says the people who have to live near this proposed landfill should be given a chance to have their say.
"The final questions to Walker Environmental was that the profit and the all mighty dollar will not offset tens of thousands of letters from the community who do not want this to take place in our area."
Comiskey thinks that Municipalities should have the right to say yes or no to landfills of waste coming from other municipalities.
