WOODSTOCK - The WCI Junior Girls Volleyball team won gold yesterday at the WOSSA Championship.
The Red Devils earned a spot in the finals after beating Southside Secondary School in three games. Head Coach of the Junior Team Nicole Stewart says she is really proud of the girls and the way they competed in the final against St. Michael Catholic Secondary School from Stratford.
"We went four games against them, we took the first, they took the second game and then we worked hard to take the final two games to come home with a gold medal."
Stewart says WCI hosted the event for both the junior and senior ladies on Wednesday.
"WOSSA took place here at WCI, both the Senior and Junior teams earned the right to host WOSSA, so it was a big day yesterday at WCI."
Stewart says the girls got to play in front of the entire school.
"The whole school was there to cheer us on for most of the day. We had a lot of classes come down and watch us, so that was really great for the girls. I know it was a little hard for them to have their peers around, because volleyball is sometimes a game of errors, and whenever they would make a mistake they would feel a little bit heavier than normal. They were so excited to overcome this tough team, push forward, stay focused and win. When we got that final point to beat Stratford, the whole team rushed onto the court and were jumping and screaming and hugging each other, it was a really special experience."
The senior team came up just short losing in the finals, winning a silver medal. The senior ladies had a great season as well losing to Mother Theresa Secondary School in the finals.
