Dog enthusiasts will be coming together for this years Wienerfest at the Embro Community Centre.
EMBRO - Canada's largest breed specific event is just around the corner. Wienerfest 2018 is going to include 110 vendors, food and beverages, games, races and so much more.
The day starts on June 23rd at the Embro Community Centre. The doors will open at 9:00 a.m. and the first event gets underway at 9:30 a.m. Things wrap up at 4:00 p.m. Some of the events include bobbing for wieners, a costume contest, a yogurt licking competition, a live auction and more.
Organizer, Linda Collier says the event isn't just about daschunds.
"It's not only just about bringing the dogs because you don't have to have a wiener dog to attend, it's any dog that can come but it's also an outdoor shopping experience."
Cynder the Chaotic Daschund will be returning this year. Cynder is a 6 year old miniature dachshund that can do over 100 tricks. Some of the tricks include throwing out the trash, ricocheting from her owner's hip, and skate boarding down ramps.
Collier says they're also looking to help a good cause.
"Any of the money raised that we have goes towards the Tiny Paws Dog Rescue. Daschunds really have a health issue with their back so they need carts or back surgery so we also have a fund to help dachshund owners that find themselves in that situation."
One back surgery can cost $7,000 and a cart on top of it can cost $500.
New this year there will be wine tasting all throughout the day. The wine is from Germany and has a Daschund on the label.
Wienerfest started 18 years ago as just a get together in London at Springbank Park with a picnic in the park with only about 20 people and 30 dogs in attendance. Today over 1,000 people and wiener dogs attend each year.
Admission is free but donations are greatly appreciated. Volunteers are always needed because there is so much to do. If any teenagers need community hours this is a great opportunity. If you are interested in volunteering you can call Linda Collier at 519-933-0687 or email info@wienerfest.ca.
