More than 400 different species of trees were planted along the Burgess Park Trail Thursday - thanks to Winchester Public School Students and the Upper Thames River Conservation Authority (UTRCA). More than 100 students participated in the 'Pits N' Mounds' program where students were taught about the importance of trees and the environment. Principal Susan Davis "the more hands on we do with our kids, the more relevant it is and the more of a lasting experience it is. For some of those kids yesterday it was kind of a first to dig, use a shovel and know that you don't lean on it, what do you do when you find a rock, is this an ok spot and just the team work and the learning that was going on was really exceptional". UTRCA Community Partner Specialist Brad Hertner says the Thames Valley District School Board is a key player towards a greener environment " we worked year and years with Woodstock. Woodstock is a great partner in additional to the local schools. We have the kids with them participating in a lot of programs and a lot of the work wouldn't get done if it wasn't for the partnerships with the local schools - they are really an important partner". Students gathered outside their school this morning to conclude the program by planting a mature tree in their yard.
