A very nervous Lillian Metcalfe took the witness stand at the Michael Rafferty Murder trial this morning. Metcalfe, a Mother of two teenage children, lives north of Guelph, not far from the murder scene where Tori Stafford was found. Metcalfe testified she was out walking along the 6th Line and Highway 6 in Nichol Township in mid spring 2009, where she would often pick up garbage as she walked, bring it home and recycle what she found. Metcalfe testified she also found a pair of blue and white ?Shaq? basketball-style running shoes and a single shoe while on her walk - the same shoes believed to have been worn by Terri-Lynne McClintic the day Tori Stafford was murdered. The shoes, she says, were found near a lilac bush along the side road. Metcalfe testified she thought the shoes were in pretty good shape and took them home and put them on a shelf in her garage where they stayed for about a week. Metcalfe told the jury she thought someone at Goodwill could use them, so she soaked the shoes in a pale of warm water and let them air dry. Metcalfe says she still had the shoes when she learned police had returned to the area on Saturday May 30th for further searching and to conduct canvassing of area residents. The shoes were eventually handed over to police; photos were taken of the shoes and sent to the centre of forensics for further analysis. The actual shoes that were found on Metcalfe?s walk were shown in court to the jury wrapped in plastic bags with markings from forensic sciences. That was the hilight of today's shortened testimony. A full summary is posted on our Michael Rafferty Trial page. Court will not sit on Thursday, and will reconvene Friday morning at 10AM.
