Woodstock City Council has decided to support a letter from the Town of Caledon which calls for a three digit Suicide and Crisis Prevention Hotline in Canada.
WOODSTOCK - Woodstock City Council supports a three digit Suicide and Crisis Prevention Hotline.
They have supported a letter from the Town of Caledon calling for the 988 number to be created. Woodstock Mayor Trevor Birtch says the hotline would work similar to 9-1-1 or 2-1-1.
"So much like having 9-1-1 for emergency services or 2-1-1 for Government services, looking at what is going on right now with the increase in self harm and suicide during the pandemic, we are calling on the CRTC, the Federal Government and Provincial Government to look at creating a special suicide hotline."
Council also supported a motion from the Town of Fort Erie, asking the Government to help in managing invasive phragmites. Mayor Birtch says phragmites are a problem in Woodstock.
"This is a grass, an invasive species that grows along wetlands, for example, in the City of Woodstock, we have been working very hard with volunteers and organizations like Oxford Stewardship to spray and control the phragmites at Brick Ponds Wetland."
The motions were passed by council and the letters will be forwarded to Premier Doug Ford and local MPP Ernie Hardeman.
