The only Line of Duty Death for the Woodstock City Fire Department will have a street named after him, after all.
WOODSTOCK - The City of Woodstock is going to add Jack Wilford's name back to a list of potential new street names.
Wilford passed away in 1989 and is the Line of Duty Death for the Woodstock City Fire Department. He died from a cancer that was caused from his line of work.
Mayor Trevor Birtch says his name shouldn't have been removed from the list in the first place.
"His name had been on the list of future street names in Woodstock. Earlier this year when council asked staff to review that list and come up with new themes, his name was inadvertently dropped from that list. So council voted unanimously to have his name added back on to that list."
The Woodstock Professional Fire Fighters Association attended council last Thursday asking for Wilford's name to be added back on the list. They noted how disappointing it was for his name to have been removed. Birtch says council agreed and a street will be named after Wilford in the not so distant future.
"He has received recognition from both the Province as well as the Federal Government and also the International Firefighters Association. Council has added his name back to the list and at the nearest opportunity where it would be fitting within a neighbourhood, we will make sure to have a proper dedication of a street name for him."
Wilford was an employee of the City of Woodstock Fire Department for 23 years before passing away of Bladder cancer. His name is inscribed on the Queen Park Memorial with all of his brother’s and sister’s names who were also recognized as Line of Duty Deaths in Ontario. His name is also on the Colorado Springs Memorial.
