WOODSTOCK - The Woodstock Fire Department has been active during Fire Prevention Week, visiting local stores in the community.
Public Information Coordinator Lisa Woods says they will be doing the free pizza delivery program again tonight.
"We have been doing this for the last 10 years, where we will follow a local delivery driver to a home that has ordered pizza and if they have working alarms, this year we have added a skill testing kitchen fire safety question, then we will pay for their pizza and we are happy to pay for the pizza."
If you don't have working smoke or CO detectors, you will have to pay for your pizza but the department will provide you with some for free.
The theme this week is serve up fire safety in the kitchen. Woods says cooking fires are the number one cause of fires in Ontario and Canada.
"We want people to look while they cook, the number one problem in the kitchen is people get distracted and forget what they were doing and then the pot on the stove overheats or boils dry, starts to smoke and catches fire. So look while you cook, or stand by your pan. Make sure your area is clear of any combustibles, so if you are making eggs, move that egg carton away, same with your tea towels and oven mitts, keep them off to the side."
Woods adds they also want to encourage everyone to make sure to check the batteries in your smoke and carbon monoxide departments and ensure they are installed on every floor of the home.
