A scam is making the rounds through Woodstock with over 300 complaints in a span of 2 days
WOODSTOCK - The Woodstock Police are being overwhelmed with calls about scams.
Constable Nikki VanLeeuwen says they have received hundred of reports about a very popular scam. "Our dispatchers have taken over 300 calls in regard to the calls people are receiving about Canada Revenue Agency. So we want to reach out to the community and we want to get people to, instead of calling the communication centre or the police, if you haven't been a victim of fraud call the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre to make your reports."
VanLeeuwen says you should call Canadian Anti-Fraud only if you did not reveal any information that could lead to identity theft. "Also if you feel like maybe you did give some information over the telephone and there may be some compromise of your identification or compromise of bank account or any information you provided, that would warrant a call to the police to place a report."
Right now there is little the Woodstock Police can do according to VanLeeuwen. "It's not on Canadian soil so right now, Canadian Anti-Fraud they are aware of the situation and they're doing their best to combat it but right now the only thing we can do is prevent ourselves from becoming victims and just hang up the phone." The best defence right now is awareness - never share personal details over the phone; simply hang up if you are contacted.
