The scam involves two phone calls. The first caller will pretend to be a relative in need of help. The second caller will claim to be a lawyer and will ask you to pay for your relative's court fees.
WOODSTOCK - The Woodstock Police Service has received multiple reports of a phone scam targeting people in the Friendly City.
Police say a fraudster will call you and pretend to be one of your relatives. They will tell you that they have been in an accident and they need your help, adding a police officer will be calling once they finish in court.
Once you get off the phone, another person will call you a couple of minutes later. This man will claim to be a court-appointed lawyer and they will tell you that you need to send a large amount of money for your relative's court fees. That's when he will ask for your banking information.
The Woodstock Police Service was able to track the call to British Columbia. Officers have also reached out to the Law Society of British Columbia to confirm that the alleged lawyer on the phone is a phony.
Police say you should never give out your banking information over the phone. It's also important to note that the Woodstock Police Service will never ask for that kind of information over the phone as well.
