Parents are being encouraged to talk to children about internet safety to protect them from online predators.
WOODSTOCK - The Internet can be a great resource, it can also be an ugly place and a spot that attracts child predators.
Woodstock Police are reminding parents to sit down with your children and warn them about the dangers of talking to strangers online. It is very easy for someone to create a fake profile on a social media site and often times predators will try to lure kids into meeting them for evil purposes. Constable Nikki VanLeeuwen tells Heart FM her best advice is to make sure your home computer is in a common area so can monitor your child's online activity.
"Know where your children's technology is in relation to the home. The best security system you can use is the parents themselves and monitor what your children are doing online."
VanLeeuwen notes to be wary if your kid has 1000 Facebook friends.
"I guarantee that those people are not all friends, and I guarantee there is a good chance at least one of those friends has a fake profile set up and it is for the purpose of evil and it is for the purpose of committing crimes and unfortunately this does happen in our community."
The best thing to do is sit down with your kids and make sure they understand just how dangerous it can be to give out any personal information online like where you live, what you're doing, or where you're going to be.
