ONTARIO - Spark Safety Solutions is offering safety tips for employers and employees who are suddenly working from home.
Safety Consultant Katelyn Versteet says one of the first things you need to do is to identify any potential hazards or risks about working from home.
"When you work in the office, the office has all these duties, that they have to worry about your safety, but then as soon as you work at home, all of those fall on your. You want to make sure you have a comfortable chair that you can sit at all day long. Are you forcing yourself to sit up and move because often when you work at home, you don't that little bit of exercise that you would normally get."
Versteet says employers need to remind employees that they have a part to play in their own safety.
"Which can be hard for an employer to do because it is still partially their responsibility but it's not like the employer can just knock on your door and say I'm here to do a check up. It's good to educate your employees about the importance of taking a stretch break or what does it mean to have good mental health at home, so it is good to keep your employees educated."
Other tips include having a remote work from home policy, encourage employees to report discomfort and make sure to keep track of your efforts. You can read more work from home safety tips online here.
