250 have already registered for the annual event
TAVISTOCK - It's that time of year again when hundreds descend on Tavistock for the World Crokinole Championships.
250 people have already signed up this year, which is slightly down from last year.
Co-chair for the event John Schultz says the game can get intense at times.
"When you are playing for $1000 they are competitive, they are serious and the arena is pretty quiet when you get down to the finals. It's almost like golf. No body has to hold up a sign saying Quiet Please but it is quiet and people are speaking in whispers just so you don't disrupt the players. "
Schultz tells Heart FM what is takes to be a crokinole champ.
"I think you have to be, probably like any sport, committed to it. You know, practice, practice, practice and probably the mental attitude as well to it. You go in there and say I can win, I can beat them and not let the pressure get to you ."
He says there are people coming from British Columbia, Prince Edward Island and 8 states in the US who have already registered.
Schultz says the same eight people usually end up in the final, but anything could happen.
"We have had some three-pete winners that won it three years and I know those are the ones that are probably pretty serious but we are always, almost cheering for a new winner just so there is somebody else who is in there then. We aren't against the old winners, but it's nice to have new ones."
Registration opens at 7:30 this morning at the Tavistock arena.
Schultz says it's a game for all ages with the youngest already registered at 6 years and the oldest at 83.
