Inn Out of the Cold will be extended to be able to help the homeless for all months of the year, not just the Winter months.
WOODSTOCK - The homeless of Woodstock will now get a familiar groups' help in the warmer months of the year. Operation Sharing and the County of Oxford has agreed that the Inn Out of the Cold program should continue year-round rather than just in the winter months.
Warden David Mayberry says that needing help is not seasonal.
"The reality is that people need shelter year round. The proposal coming forward is for the County to continue supporting the Inn Out of the Cold, not just for the Winter, but for the full year."
Oxford County's rental vacancy rate of 2.6%, combined with high average market rents contribute to the homeless rates in the community. Operation Sharing and Oxford County are looking to do their part in trying to help with this issue.
Mayberry adds that people are generally grateful for receiving the help.
"Inn Out of the Cold for the past 12 to 13 years has provided shelter during the Winter months. You can have a hot meal at night, stay over night, shower, have a breakfast in the morning and be on your way again."
The cost of extending the shelter's operations will be covered by the 100% provincially funded Community Homelessness Prevention Initiative.
