Six teens were honoured for going the extra mile in the Oxford community.
WOODSTOCK - Six Oxford County youth have been recognized by the local chanpter of the United Way for their outstanding contributions to the community.
Community Impact Coordinator Michelle Franklin says the Youth Leadership Council found the same students often get recognized for sports and academics, so these awards are intended for youth who aren't necessarily recognized in the community.
"They wanted to recognized all youth, specifically connected to belonging in Oxford County that our community conversations revealed was an issue so they were really just trying to do something to foster an inclusive and belonging community by really recognizing the important accomplishments that youth make in our community," Frankin said.
Some of the award winners were selected because of their community service hours above and beyond what was required to graduate, Franklin said.
"People were involved in many different activities whether they were volunteering within their schools, there was one youth in particular who had come up with some initiatives on her own to better her community doing some advocacy work around youth issues. So many, many accomplishments."
Franklin said all of the winners were very touched.
"I think there were lots of tears, lots of laughter and people, the youth in particular were very pleased that someone had taken the time to write a nomination form for them on their behalf and the awards were well received."
Appreciation award winners included Christina Fraser, Kaitlyn Ispen, Nicole Plant, Kursten Saunders, Sebastien Vienneau and an award winner from College Avenue Secondary School.
