Oxford County is considering a motion to become a zero waste community.
Oxford County will vote on a motion to become a zero waste community by 2025 at their next council meeting on September 23rd.
Originally the motion was going to be presented at the meeting earlier this week, however Deputy Warden Ted Comiskey wanted some more time to work on the wording to make sure everyone understood what they are trying to accomplish. He tells Heart FM becoming a zero waste community means having all our waste dealt with in house.
"We have about 40,000 tonnes of waste going to our landfill and what people don't realize is about 20,000 tonnes is going outside of the County and so what we have to do with zero waste is look after ourselves and not have our waste exported. So what we have to do on a yearly basis is reduce the amount of waste that is produced in Oxford, that's the main thing and we are aiming for zero waste."
In order to do this we need to limit the amount of waste at our landfills and we can do this with new initiatives and educating the public now our landfill at Salford will be full by 2055 however if we approve this motion it will mean less waste go to the dump and allowing to be useful until the year 2100.
