Zorra Township is looking to increase the fine for off leash dogs in public places to $200.
ZORRA TOWNSHIP - A hefty fine could be yours if your dog is caught in public without a leash in Zorra Township.
By-law Enforcement Officer for Zorra Township Matthew Paul knows this is a problem in the township and is seeking to have the fine increased. "Aside from soccer fields it is basically anywhere in a public place, all dogs should be leashed. If they aren't leashed that's what we consider running at large and they can be fined. We're currently looking into amending our Animal Control By-Law - So the current fine for having a dog running at large is $105, we are looking at amending that to be $200."
Paul explains the reasons on why he would like to see leash free dogs removed from the playing fields. "There's safety issues with dogs running at large. You have issues where dogs could perhaps run out onto the street, you have dogs that don't always get along with other dogs, when somebody else is walking a dog on a leash your dog is off a leash there could be an issue between the two dogs, finally, not everybody is a fan of dogs. It is always in the best interest to always keep your dogs on a leash."
Paul hopes the public will understand only leashed dogs can be in public spaces and tells owners where they can take the leash off of their furry friends. "In Thamesford there is an off leash dog park, it is fully fenced. That is the place to go if you want to have your dog off leash, otherwise it would have to be on your own property. It is a Zorra Township specific by-law but every city and township in Ontario would have something very similar."
