It's an unofficial tradition where students skip school and spend the day at the beach instead.
NORFOLK - It's the first Friday in June, also known as Beach Day for a lot of students in the area.
Police say it's an unofficial tradition that's where students will often skip school to spend the day a the beach. It's not endorsed by schools and the some kids will even skip school without their parents consent.
Constable Andrew Gamble with the Norfolk OPP says it's also not endorsed by law enforcement, but OPP officers will be out and about today to make sure everyone is being safe and no laws are being broken.
"We recognize that many students look forward to spending time with friends as the school year begins to wind down. Our message is simple: make responsible choices, look out for one another, and avoid behaviours that could put your safety or future at risk. One poor decision can have lasting consequences."
He adds officers will be in Turkey Point, Long Point and Port Dover today to keep eye out for underage drinking, impaired driving, tresspassing and more.
"No body is telling you that you can't have fun or make the day memorable, but we need you to understand that you and you alone are responsible for the choices that you make both good and bad. If you make good decisions, good things almost always happen but if you make poor decisions, more often than not poor things happen."
