Coyote Trap

Woodstock Council split a 5-2 vote to hire an animal trapper to capture a coyote in the southwest end of the city.

WOODSTOCK - An impassioned speech from Woodstock councillor Todd Poetter was not enough to block a motion that would hire a coyote trapper.

Councillor Shawn Shapton put forward the request to hire an animal trapper to capture a coyote that has been harassing one home owner in the southwest end of the city.  Shapton noted the need to do something before an accident happens.

Poetter says he understands that the area being discussed is heavily populated by people, "I understand that, I just have a problem with trapping a coyote that hasn't made any aggressive move towards anybody and our mandate is to try and live with wildlife because we are taking their environment."

Poetter's argument garnered support from County/City councillor Deb Tait who would vote against the motion which was passed 5-2.

A trapper will be hired by the City to trap the coyote during the 2015 season. The estimated cost of capture and disposal of an animal is $400 however under the motion that maximum expense is $2000. Poetter pointed out that due to Ministry laws if the animal is unable to be relocated within a 1 kilometre radius from where it's trapped it would have to be put down.

Poetter said half-heartedly that in his experience the coyote never wins, "my whole life the coyote has always been hit in the head with an anvil and has never caught the roadrunner and I thought I could save one coyote."
