Staff Photo

The Woodstock Police have laid charges against a youth as a result of an investigation into a bomb threat at a local public school.

UPDATE - A youth has been charged in the investigation into a bomb threat at Springbank Public School.

The Woodstock Police have released an update saying that after an extensive investigation, the Criminal Investigations Branch has laid charges against a 14-year-old, whose name is protected under the Youth Criminal Justice Act. The youth is facing charges of public mischief and uttering threats to cause death or bodily harm.

It is also being said that the investigation determined the threat to be a deliberate hoax that resulted in a significant response from first responders, including the Woodstock Police, Woodstock Fire Services, and Oxford County Paramedic Services. This incident also disrupted the school day, along with causing unnecessary fear, concern, and stress for the staff, students, parents, and members of the community.

That is not all, as the police say, once the investigation progressed, they worked closely with law enforcement in the United States after information was identified linking this incident in Woodstock to separate investigations that were underway south of the border. During the efforts, investigators identified a youth in Woodstock and a youth in Ohio as the suspects linked to the Springbank Public School threat, as well as other bomb threat and swatting incidents in the United States.

The working partnership included the Fresno Police Department in California, the Youngstown Police Department in Ohio, and it was with the help of the Crown Attorney's Office and the Woodstock Police Service that charges were laid against the youth from Woodstock in the alleged offences that occurred in the Friendly City.
