By 2020, 1 in 3 Canadians are expected to have diabetes. Today, already 1 in 4 of us live with the disease, having either diabetes or prediabetes. That's why Zehrs and the Canadian Diabetes Association have joined to provide information on proper grocery shopping. Pharmacists will be providing Diabetes Risk Assessments at Zehrs all month long. Managing Pharmacist Bhavesh Shah says it's a proactive way to prevent diabetes. "It's a paper based questionnaire where we analyzed your risk of getting diabetes in the future. So how likely are you to get diabetes and what you can do to minimize your risk. What you can do to reduce your risk? Diet and exercise, it's the main focus here," said Shah. Yesterday, a Registered Dietitian was at Zehrs providing healthy tips about grocery cart items. "I'm looking for things like more fruits and vegetables, more whole grains, low fat milk products, and lean meats and alternatives," said Registered Dietitian Jessica Janssens, "look for low sugar products. So I like to make the recommendation of 8-10 grams of sugar or less. You see a lot of things out there like yogurt or juices and they have sugar you might not even realize. They can have as much sugar as a chocolate bar. And then of course high fibre foods and that 3 or 4 grams or more per serving." A free, 5-minute long Diabetes Risk Assessment is available at the pharmacy counter in the Zehrs on Dundas St. in Woodstock.
