Paediatric Regional Outreach Program is being expanded to 33 hospitals across Ontario.
LONDON/WOODSTOCK - Hospitals across the province will have the opportunity to receive specialized training, so they know how to treat a child in an emergency situation.
The London Health Sciences Centre has received a grant so it can expand it's Paediatric Regional Outreach Program (PROP) to smaller communities. It consists of computerized mannequins that can mimic real kids as much as possible. They can not only mimic a pulse and breathing, but they can change their pupils and have seizures.
Dr. Gurinder Sangha is the Medical Director for PROP. He says the mannequins can also be hooked up to monitors and receive medication through an IV.
"For an example, if there was a child having a seizure the team could place an IV and give the patient medication to stop the seizure. The mannequin that was seizing would then would stop seizing if that is how it was written for it to happen."
The PROP offers three types of mannequins in three different sizes; school aged, toddler, and newborn.
Staff members at Woodstock Hospital have received this training for the past two years now. Dr. Erica Cleto, a family practice emergency provider for Woodstock's emergency department, says it has been a great experience.
"Actually being able to have the hands on experience and to practice with our own equipment in our own spaces for events that we need to act quickly for and in an organized way but we don't have a lot of opportunities for rehearsal, is really helpful and really important. It helps us make those first few minutes smooth."
The PROP is being expanded to 33 hospitals across Ontario. Dr. Sangha says Tillsonburg District Memorial Hospital and Alexandra Hospital Ingersoll will receive the training in 2027.
