The City of Woodstock said goodbye to the old Perry Street arena with a Woodstock Navy Vets Alumni game 25 years ago today.
WOODSTOCK - It was 25 years ago when the City of Woodstock said goodbye to the old Perry Street Arena.
The arena closed with a Navy Vets Alumni game on April 20, 1996. It was the last game in the old barn. Two months later the arena was demolished. At the time it was the oldest arena in the Province having opened in 1914.
Gallery Cinemas took its place and the Woodstock Navy Vets moved to the new WDCC in August of 1996. The Perry Street arena hosted several historical events and some of hockey's best and brightest skated on the ice surface.
Some of the legends to play at the Perry Street Arena include Howie Morenz, Maurice Richard, Gordie Howe, Bobby Hull, Walter and Wayne Gretzky, former Vets Bernie Nicholls & Mike Craig, and figure skaters Elvis Stojko, Lloyd Eisler, and Isabelle Brasseur.
