Team Canada has some local representation in the WKC World Karate Championships in Orlando Florida.

TILLSONBURG - Eight local martial artists are currently competing in the WKC World Karate Championships in Orlando Florida.

The fighters are between the ages of 12 and 55, and they train out of the PITT Martial Arts Schools in Tillsonburg and LaSalette.

Coach Patrick Grigg says they're all hoping to bring some medals back to Oxford County.

"It's a tough tournament so to come back with a medal; a top three gold, silver, bronze is a big deal. You could have 8, 12, 15, 20 people in your division depending on the year! It's a good competition so it means a lot to these people."

They will be competing in a variety of divisions including light contact fighting, point fighting and continuous fighting.

Although it is considered a black belt tournament, Grigg says anyone can qualify.

"It's not really what belt you are it's how well you fight or how well you do your kata or how well you do your weapons. They want the best of the best it doesn't matter your belt."

Before qualifying for worlds the competitors first had to excel at the Regionals in London and place in the top four at the Nationals in Ottawa.

The championship will take place all week long, before crowning the winners on Saturday.
