No To Organic Collections, Yes To Backyard Composting

Oxford County could be saying "no" to organics collection, and "yes" to backyard composting. That's the recommendation that will be debated by County Council Wednesday night. It comes from a workshop of staff and councillors who are trying to figure out ways of diverting more waste away from the Salford landfill. The Waste Management steering committee found an organics pick-up program would be too expensive for the expected results. Other municipalities that have tried organic pick-up found that only about 25% of households participated. That leaves the County now looking at rolling out backyard composters. In Heart FM's Webchat with the Warden this week Don McKay was asked whether the backyard composting plan would involve a cost to the taxpayers. "Well that's part of the discussion and we would very much encourage the public's input on that. How do we best manage this area of our waste stream? It's very high weight, and it's mostly water so obviously the easiest place to deal with it is in your own backyard, but it has to be done properly." It is also being recommended the County approve 1-year extensions on their current garbage and large item pick-up and recycling contracts. That will allow the committee studying the waste management issue more time to set the County's future goals. Another waste management workshop is set for September 11th. The public will also be asked for their feedback in the weeks and months ahead.
